Meet the Artist: Andrea GeerContinuing in our series of artists participating in Art Reflected: The Inspiration of 100 Years, today's post features Andrea Geer of Rochester who was inspired by Ad Reinhardt, 1913 - 1967, originally of Buffalo, NY. Bio: Andrea holds an MFA from RIT. Her career developed from teaching art to creating clothing and accessory design and eventually led her to knitwear design. Her interest in clothing has inspired her to create knitwear that has a sculptural quality and reflects a fresh and contemporary approach that is organic and direct. There is a loyal following of customers who appreciate her sophisticated yet playful creations. They are sold under the label Andrea Geer Designs. Andrea and her assistant create the knit pieces as well as the button and pin closures that enhance the overall design of the clothing. Andrea has participated in the Smithsonian Craft Show, Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, Craftboston and Rochester Fashion Week to name a few. Inspiration: "The Al Reinhardt painting was my choice because of the structure of the painting and the very intense yet subtle coloration. This is a painting that intrigues and interests me because of its' uncompromising presence. This body of work represents an approach to knitwear that is direct and organic. Pieces are hand loomed on vintage punch card knitting machines and stitches are manipulated by hand to create fabrics that address and articulate my artistic goals. As i learn more about my craft, my ideals evolve. At this time, I am most interested in how the fabrics move around the body and how architectural form ccan be created using yard. In addition to the knitwear, I form the one of a kind buttons and pin closures from polymer clay to enhance and support the overall design. Most of my work is one of a kind with a small amount of limited production. Making fabrics and designing the patterns allows me to experiment with texture, form and movement as I am creating the garment. this is a playful process that inspires me." The fashionistas among you will salivate as you look at the hand-loomed knitwear, complete with polymer buttons and pins, from New York’s Andrea Geer. I love the easy, asymmetric drape of her knit pieces and appreciate her use of models of various ages and sizes. (More views on FB.) And to have designer polymer buttons topping off the look, so cool. Rollover details to see them up close and be sure to catch the necklace at the end of the gallery. Andrea is new to the Craftboston Spring Show and the Smithsonian Craft Show next month. Note some new pictures from Karen Noyes on the Craftboston show site too.
